How CILS B1 scoring works
CILS B1 Cittadinanza assesses listening, reading with grammatical reflection, writing and speaking. Understanding performance means looking at each skill, not just a single overall impression. The Exam Format guide introduces the components.
Official scoring requirements and assessment criteria are set by CILS. Consult current official CILS B1 Cittadinanza information and your authorised examination centre for pass marks, grading rules and result interpretation. This guide does not substitute ProntoEsame’s practice settings for those requirements.
The writing and speaking criteria summarised below come from the official CILS B1 Cittadinanza assessment criteria (PDF). Consult that document for the full assessment details; the practice-review advice is separate.
Listening
Listening assesses your understanding of spoken Italian. In revision, check whether you understood the main message and the information requested, rather than recognising only isolated words.
What to review in practice
When reviewing practice, identify the phrase that supports the answer. Where a transcript is available, use it after attempting the task to find missed vocabulary, negatives or time expressions.
Reading
The reading component includes comprehension and grammatical reflection. Prepare to understand what a text communicates and how its language contributes to meaning.
What to review in practice
For each practice mistake, return to the passage and find evidence. Distinguish misunderstanding the text from a problem with vocabulary, pronouns, connectors or verb forms.
Writing
The published CILS assessment document lists communicative effectiveness, stylistic appropriateness, grammatical correctness, vocabulary appropriateness and range, and spelling and punctuation for written production. These are official qualitative criteria, not ProntoEsame’s own scoring rules.
What to review in practice
Review whether you addressed the prompt, made your message clear and organised your ideas. Then check vocabulary, verb forms, agreement and spelling. Follow the actual examination paper’s instructions.
Speaking
The published CILS assessment document lists communicative effectiveness, grammatical correctness, vocabulary appropriateness and range, and pronunciation and intonation for oral production. Do not assume that a fluent memorised answer fulfils a different prompt.
What to review in practice
Review a practice recording for relevance, clarity and connected ideas. Notice pauses, repeated language errors and words that are difficult to understand. These are revision priorities, not official scoring weights.
Understanding your result
First identify who issued the result. An official CILS result and a ProntoEsame practice result serve different purposes. For an official result, use the accompanying CILS information and ask your examination centre to clarify anything unclear.
For a practice result, look at the activity completed, the individual skills and the feedback available. A lower result can point to a revision priority; one strong attempt does not prove that performance will stay consistent across new tasks or on exam day.
What happens when one area is weaker?
Do not assume that strength in one skill compensates for another. Check the official requirements rather than averaging practice scores to decide whether you would pass.
If your official result raises questions about another sitting or certification, ask your centre and consult current CILS guidance. A practice platform cannot determine your resit arrangements or qualification status.
Improving weak areas
- Choose one specific problem from your feedback, such as missed listening details or unclear writing.
- Identify the cause: language knowledge, misunderstood instructions or a rushed response.
- Practise that skill and produce an improved answer.
- Try a different task to check understanding rather than memory.
- Review consistency over several attempts, then bring the skills together in a mock.
The Practice Test guide connects to focused skill activities. The Mock Exam guide explains how to review a full simulation.
